Pain and injury are not necessarily the same thing. While an injury often equals pain, pain doesn’t always equal injury.
According to Steve, if my muscles hurt, and I’m huffing and puffing, and in pain, that’s a good sign. In fact, if I’m training at a high level, this type of pain is to be expected. “Discomfort results in improvement,” he says. In other words: Buck up.
On the other hand, if a tendon is pulling or something doesn’t feel right, it could be a sign of injury. In this case, the athlete should stop immediately.
As athletes, we need to recognize the difference and respond in the right way.
