The “Gilbert Johnson 1-Mile-a-Day Challenge”

The “Gilbert Johnson 1-Mile-a-Day Challenge”

My husband’s uncle Gilbert is 82 years old. He has knee problems, glaucoma, and other aches and pains that commonly wreak havoc on people as they age.
But he is no ordinary 82-year-old.
Every summer we travel to Omaha, my husband’s home town, to visit his family. Omaha is home to the ever-expanding and awesome Henry Doorly [...]

Biking to Frye Lake, in Wind River Range

Biking to Frye Lake, in Wind River Range

Right now, the “Switchbacks” and road that connects nearby Sinks Canyon State Park and Bruce’s Bridge to Highway 28 and South Pass, above my town of Lander, WY, is closed to vehicular traffic, which means as a cyclist you can have the 8 miles of pavement up the Switchbacks all to your self.

This is the first of several fitness tips I’ll share following my Thursday sessions with Elemental Training Center’s co-founder — and my coach — Steve Bechtel.
Thursday, June 17, 2010

Recently, the foothills above Lander, WY, received three feet of snow. In mid-May. What this meant was instead of a trailrunning outing, I went on a snowshoeing outing. It was a stellar bluebird day!

Running “The Bus” Trail above Lander, WY

It’s spring in Wyoming. Which means there is snow still falling. As I write this today (May 11), we’re getting pounded with snow. The forecast calls for up to 20 inches of snow in our foothills. Boo hoo! I know, the optimist would say we need the moisture, and everything will be so green come [...]
